In Copper Age Iberia, Local Y-Chromosome Lineages Were Almost Entirely Replaced. Female Lineages Were Not

A study of 271 ancient Iberians across 8,000 years found a striking asymmetry during the Copper-to-Bronze Age transition — one that says something uncomfortable about how these population turnovers happened.

Iberia is the best-sampled corner of ancient Europe. A single study sequenced 271 ancient Iberians, producing a genomic history of the peninsula spanning 8,000 years (Olalde et al., Science, 2019, PMID: 30872528).

Within it sits one of the most-discussed findings in the field.

The asymmetry

Between roughly 2500 and 2000 BC, as steppe-related ancestry arrived in Iberia, the incoming ancestry accounted for a substantial minority of the overall genome — but close to all of the Y chromosomes in the sampled Bronze Age individuals were replaced by incoming lineages.

Mitochondrial DNA, inherited through the maternal line, shows nothing comparable.

Autosomal ancestry turned over partially. Male-line ancestry turned over almost completely.

What that could mean, stated carefully

An asymmetry this strong is consistent with several histories: incoming men having disproportionate reproductive success over many generations, strongly patrilocal social structures, or violent displacement of local men.

The authors were appropriately restrained about which, and so is this post. Ancient DNA constrains the space of possible histories. It rarely picks one.

What can be said is that the change was socially structured. Something about that society determined which people had descendants, and it operated differently on men and women. That is a fact about culture that only genetics could have surfaced.

The rest of the 8,000 years

The same dataset documents North African gene flow into Iberia well before the Islamic period, considerable regional variation across the peninsula, and the demographic shifts of the Roman period. Iberia was never a genetic backwater and never homogeneous.

The tests

One thing worth keeping in mind when reading any result from this era: because Y-chromosome and autosomal histories diverged so sharply here, a paternal-line result and a whole-genome ancestry result can tell genuinely different stories about the same family. Neither is wrong.
