Your Ancestors Were Replaced More Often Than You Think. Here Is the Whole Sequence

Go back 4,000 years and roughly 90% of the ancestry in Britain belonged to people who would be almost entirely replaced within a few centuries. Go back 4,000 more and the same thing had already happened once.
The single most consistent finding of the ancient DNA revolution is that human populations do not sit still. Nearly everywhere sampled densely enough shows repeated turnover — sometimes gradual, sometimes near-total, and almost never matching the story assumed beforehand.

Where the data comes from
Every one of these tests rests on the same foundation: published ancient genomes, curated into the Allen Ancient DNA Resource by the Reich Lab (Mallick et al., Scientific Data, 2024). Individual era findings come from the studies linked in each post.
That matters for a practical reason. These tests are not proprietary discoveries — they are calculators built on top of openly published science, and the quality of any result depends on how many individuals from that era and region have actually been excavated and sequenced. Coverage is excellent for Neolithic central Europe and thin for large parts of the world.
Three things to hold onto
Ancestry is a similarity measurement. It compares your genome with sequenced ancient individuals under a chosen reference panel. Change the panel and the numbers change.
Turnover is not a story about violence by default. Ancient DNA shows that ancestry proportions changed. Why — disease, fertility, displacement, absorption — usually needs archaeology, and often stays unresolved.
Nobody is descended from an era. "Bronze Age ancestry" means resemblance to individuals sequenced from that period, not membership of a people.
