Farming Didn't Spread Across Europe. Farmers Did
The oldest debate in European prehistory — whether agriculture arrived as an idea or as people — was settled by DNA. Early European farmers descend largely from a population that entered from Anatolia, and modern Europeans are a mixture of at least three ancient groups.
Archaeologists argued about it for a century. Around 8,500 years ago, farming appeared in southeastern Europe and moved northwest across the continent over the following three millennia. Did the idea travel between existing communities, or did farmers themselves migrate?
Ancient DNA answered it, and the answer was people.
Three ancestral populations, not one
The framing study showed that most present-day Europeans descend from a mixture of at least three ancient populations (Lazaridis et al., Nature, 2014, PMID: 25230663):

Early European farmers were not converted locals. Genetically they resemble populations from Anatolia far more than the hunter-gatherers already living where they settled.
They did not replace everyone
The interesting part is what happened next. Farmers and hunter-gatherers coexisted for centuries in some regions, and hunter-gatherer ancestry rises again in later Neolithic populations after an initial decline — a resurgence, not a clean sweep.
The Neolithic transition was not one event. It was a long, uneven, regionally specific process, and its genetic signature differs between Iberia, central Europe and Britain.
Britain is the sharpest case: there, incoming farmers left very little room for the locals, with the Neolithic transition mediated by continental farmers and minimal gene flow from resident hunter-gatherers.
What the era test can and cannot show
Your genome does not carry a label saying "Anatolian farmer". What a test measures is how much your genotype resembles sequenced individuals assigned to that group, given a reference panel — and those assignments are themselves inferences from a limited number of excavated skeletons.
Coverage varies enormously by region. Some parts of Neolithic Europe are well sampled; others are nearly blank.
